How to measure the competition on keywords?
You should use the tool Keyword Planner here. You will find a video below explaining how to use it and sort by competition rate. You should start the video at 3min12 to reach the core of the subject

I have used it myself with the word ‘SEO’ and I have sort the results by competition rate. I have used all those keywords in my article just to explain to you how it was working.
Note: Writing a big list of keywords is not the key to making a good SEO, it was just an example to show how to use Keyword Planner. The best practice is to focus on 2-4 keywords with a low competition rate and write good content about them.
How to measure the number of backlinks that have competitors’ websites?
The idea of measuring the number of backlinks that competitors have is simply to be able to beat them by having more quality backlinks than them.
There is a tool for it called Majestic SEO here
When you enter the URL of a website. It can be used for your site to evaluate your own SEO or it can be used on a competitor website. It allows you to see :
- The quality rank of backlinks (called trust flow)
- The quantity rank of backlinks (called citation flow)
- The list of backlinks
- Which page of your site (or of the competitors) receive the most backlinks

I’ve typed the corresponding page in Majestic SEO, then I went to backlinks tab to be able to know the list of backlinks
To beat http://marketingland.com/ webpage, I simply have to try to get more backlinks with better quality than the ones displayed on the page above.
